Lawyers (women) for Research

Advocacy Forum and International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) is conducting a joint research on the impact of conflict on women, with a focus on gender-based violence in 15 districts in Nepal to understand the key consequences of the armed conflict on women’s rights, including their economic, social and cultural rights.

Advocacy Forum is looking for committed women lawyers for the study. The lawyer will work in close coordination with the project coordinators of Advocacy forum and ICTJ and other members of the research team. She will be responsible to contribute to overall output of the project in her capacity and will carry out the assigned tasks with integrity according to the deadlines. The duration of the position is for four months (subject to extension, if needed). Please apply by 4 December 2008.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal insights throughout the research process, including during the designing of the assessment tools, analysis of the information collected, drafting of report and case studies;
• Contribute to the analysis of the court procedures/functioning from gender perspective
• Provide legal insights while analysing the role of formal and informal justice systems at the community level in situations of conflict
• Provide legal insights while assessing the major issues and impacts of conflict on women’s access to justice
• Determine the profile of people that need to be interviewed in each district
• Travel to various parts of the country for information gathering
• Arrange and conduct interviews, focus group discussions, as necessary in various districts of Nepal for information gathering
• Transcribe the interviews and discussions immediately after each session
• Collaborate with the research co-ordinators and other team members to share findings and recommendations at different stages of the research

Qualifications

• Bachelors/Masters Degree in law
• At least 3 years experience in working in legal and human rights field
• Knowledge in the areas of legal or judicial reform
• Experience in conducting interviews and working with women
• Experience in providing legal aid for women
• Ability to perform well under pressure and willingness to travel to remote parts of Nepal
• Good inter-personal and team work
• Knowledge in gender
• English skills is an asset
• Knowledge of local languages will be highly desirable.
